The Dark Side of Health Trends: How "Gurus" Are Making Big Claims Without Science

The first step is identifying a vulnerable...

,

Dr. Adrian Chavez is one of my favorite evidence-based experts in the health and wellness space. His podcast, The Nutrition Science Podcast, focuses on helping listeners cut through the noise and make informed decisions about nutrition and health. In one particular episode, Dr. Chavez discusses the rise of alternative health gurus, the tactics they use to gain fame, and why these methods can be dangerous.

The Rise of the Medical Medium

The episode begins with the story of Stephanie Tessone, a woman who tragically passed away from breast cancer after following the advice of Anthony William, known as The Medical Medium. William claims to communicate with a "spirit of compassion," providing him with healing information far beyond modern medicine. Despite his questionable methods, William has built a massive following, authored best-selling books, and appeared on major platforms.

While it’s easy to dismiss William’s claims, Dr. Chavez explains that his success shows how such figures can manipulate vulnerable individuals into following potentially harmful advice.

The Formula for Becoming an Alternative Health Guru

Dr. Chavez breaks down how alternative health gurus use a simple blueprint to gain popularity. The first step is identifying a vulnerable audience—people desperate for solutions to their health issues, such as chronic diseases, hormone imbalances, or weight struggles. These individuals are often willing to try anything, making them the perfect target for someone promising a quick fix.

Once the audience is in place, the guru introduces a solution, usually in the form of a restrictive diet or protocol. The key is to speak with confidence, presenting their method as the ultimate cure. Dr. Chavez compares this to the ketogenic diet, where proponents claim that cutting carbs is the key to weight loss. While the explanation sounds compelling, Dr. Chavez points out that much of the success comes from simple principles like calorie restriction and reducing processed foods.

The Power of Testimonials

A powerful tool used by these gurus is the selective sharing of testimonials. Dr. Chavez explains that when a guru promotes a restrictive diet, some followers will see positive results, like weight loss or improved health. These success stories are amplified to create the illusion that the diet works for everyone. However, the voices of those who didn’t see results or whose health worsened are often ignored or silenced.

This selective sharing leads to a placebo effect, where people who feel even slight improvements convince themselves the diet works, while those who didn’t benefit may start doubting themselves. The guru continues to promote the method, using positive testimonials to build their brand and keep followers engaged.

The Harmful Impact of These Methods

While these methods may seem harmless at first, Dr. Chavez warns that they can have serious consequences. Many of these restrictive diets are nutritionally inadequate and can cause long-term health problems. For example, diets like the carnivore diet, which eliminate most food groups, might lead to short-term benefits but often result in nutrient imbalances.

Dr. Chavez points out that while cutting out foods like gluten or dairy may temporarily help people with food sensitivities, these diets aren’t sustainable and can be harmful in the long run. The real danger is that these gurus are convincing people to avoid conventional medical treatments that could save their lives, opting instead for unproven, extreme protocols.

A Call for Critical Thinking

The key message from Dr. Chavez is a call for critical thinking. He urges listeners to be skeptical of individuals claiming to have special information or methods that are "ahead of their time." These claims are often based on shaky science and are marketed using manipulative tactics to convince people to believe in something unproven.

Dr. Chavez emphasizes that health is complex, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Rather than following the latest diet trend or guru, the best approach is to understand the science behind nutrition and health and apply that knowledge in a way that works for each individual.

Chappelle’s Show / Comedy Central

Dr. Chavez’s episode serves as a reminder to stay informed and skeptical about health advice, especially when it comes to individuals who claim to have "special" solutions. The rise of alternative health gurus is a result of clever marketing, preying on vulnerable people. By staying critical and informed, we can avoid falling into the trap of misleading information and make better decisions for our health.
