The Truth About Detoxes: Your Body’s Already Got This
So why do celebrities swear by these Hollywood...

,
Today we're diving into detoxes! Dr. Mike Israetel of Renaissance Periodization, who’s well-known for his evidence-based fitness advice and no-nonsense approach to health, shared his take on the topic. Spoiler alert: detoxes are largely nonsense.
So, what’s the deal with detoxes? Well, Dr. Mike breaks it down pretty clearly. You know those over-the-counter detox products at CVS that promise to make you a “new you” after a few days of weird liquid diets? Turns out, they're not all they're cracked up to be. Your body is actually designed to detox itself—and it’s doing it all the time. Here’s the rundown on how detoxification really works.
Your Body's Built-In Detox System
Your liver, kidneys, and other organs are doing the hard work of detoxing for you every single day. The liver metabolizes toxins, while your kidneys help remove waste through urine. You even detox through your sweat and, yes, even tears. If something is seriously wrong and your body can’t handle this on its own—let’s say after severe poisoning or organ failure—that’s when a medical detox, like dialysis, comes into play. And trust me, that's not the kind of detox any of us are lining up for.

What About Popular Detox Products?
So why do celebrities swear by these Hollywood detoxes or apple cider vinegar cleanses? Dr. Mike explains that when people are coming off extended periods of stress, poor eating, and lack of sleep—often combined with alcohol and other substances (cocaine, ahem!)—doing a few days of nothing but a "detox" drink can make them feel a bit better. But the reality isn’t that the detox drink is some miracle elixir; it's simply that they stopped poisoning their bodies for a couple of days. Less alcohol, less junk food, more hydration—of course you're going to feel better.
But, let’s be real: that feeling is temporary, and it doesn’t solve the underlying lifestyle problems. Dr. Mike is pretty blunt here: you can’t fix two months of treating your body like crap with a three-day juice cleanse. You’re just putting a temporary halt on the damage.
A Better Approach: Consistency Over Fads
Instead of a quick fix, Dr. Mike suggests something revolutionary—take care of your body regularly. He recommends eating healthy, getting enough sleep, exercising, and managing stress in a more balanced way. Even if you enjoy the occasional indulgence, moderation is key. Want to drink or party? Fine. Just don’t do it so often that your body starts depending on it to feel “normal.” Regular healthy habits can help build a stronger foundation, so you don’t need to rely on trendy detoxes.

Dr. Mike sums it up in a way only he can—detoxes are “f*cking bullshit.” There’s no magic reset button. What really works is boring but effective: exercise, balanced diet, proper sleep, and not overdoing the things that are harmful.
So, next time you’re tempted to reach for that cleanse, think about how you can incorporate some of those healthier habits into your daily routine instead. You’ll thank yourself later—and your liver probably will too.
